What to do after an adult
tooth is knocked out
When dealing with an intact adult tooth that has been knocked out, timing is key!
For the best possible outcome, the following needs to be done, ideally within the hour of the injury.
If an intact adult tooth is knocked out:
1) Locate the tooth.
2) If the tooth is dirty - holding the tooth by the crown (i.e. don’t touch the root of
the tooth) gently rinse the tooth with sterile saline.
3) If the tooth is still intact, using the other teeth as a guide, gently place the
tooth back in the socket, and seek dental treatment immediately.
If you are unable to place the tooth back in the socket, store the tooth in saline or the patient’s mouth, and seek dental treatment immediately.
We encourage the wearing of custom fitted mouthguards during contact sport to prevent these types of injuries from occurring.
